I paid £1700 for a new alarm, reversing camera, handsfree stereo, lights and full installation.
After returning the motorhome 4 times to fix and refix problems (a total of two weeks in the workshop), I had an independent qualified inspection carried out and the vehicle was not allowed back onto the road as the wiring was so dangerous that it posed a serious fire hazard (report available) due to exposed and shorting out wiring.
The Viper alarm has been installed in a place where it can be cut from the vehicle in seconds. The Thatcham Cat 1 certificate would not be valid in the event of a claim.
Secure-a-Car have caused £350 of damage to the blinds in the front windscreen and denied they had installed wires in the trim above the windscreen. They fitted the forward facing and reversing camera which the wires are for.
The car stereo comes up with a warning that it has been miswired and stops working. This had been 'rectified' twice and blamed on existing speaker wires. After independent inspection, the wiring is so bad that dangling live wires short the system out when you go over a bump. The fault still exists and was clearly evident when inspected. Secure-a-car said that an 'old' aerial needed replacing which would solve interference problems....a brand new one had been fitted 4 weeks previously and had worked fine with the old stereo.
One of the day time running lights fell out as I was driving it away...a warning sign of things to come.
Unfortunately this was after I had paid.
Today, the battery is still draining flat, the stereo is not fully functioning and the reversing camera has so much electrical interference that it is unusable at night and in strong sunlight (the third they have installed).
The work was to upgrade existing equipment which was all fully functioning before Secure-a-Car installed anything.
On inspecting the full extent of the wiring problems, it has been necessary to have items removed and completely rewired at an additional cost of £500 plus the cost of a camera which actually works. The cost of remaining repairs is to be determined but it is rapidly approaching the price charged for the work.
